A Sgraffito Journey
EXPLORING A SURFACE DESIGN TECHNIQUE IN TERRACOTTA AND PORCELAIN
This project is an enchanting exploration of the Sgraffito technique brought to life, as part of my graduation project at NID. Under the label of Vivikoh Studio, these collections represent the culmination of an artistic odyssey. Immerse yourselves in the tactile wonders of my ceramic creations, as they embody the fusion of artistry, technique, and personal expression. With the mesmerizing interplay of color and composition, my collections of collectables take on a life of their own, showcasing the limitless possibilities of this exquisite ceramic surface design technique.

WHAT exactly is SGRAFFITO?
Sgraffito is a highly versatile ceramic surface ornamentation technique. It involves applying layer/s of coloured slips onto leather-hard wares and selectively scratching out portions of the layer/s to reveal the clay or underlying color, resulting in contrasting images, patterns, or textures. Despite its simplicity in terms of technique and tools, sgraffito offers a wide range of creative possibilities allowing artists to explore countless variations in composition and visual expression.
WHY THIS
technique?
Being introduced to Sgraffito in college sparked my interest in its artistic potential. Choosing it for my project allowed me to explore its intricacies and utilize skills from areas like composition, color, and form. Sgraffito offered endless possibilities for experimentation and innovation, inspiring my creative exploration.

What was THE POINT?
The main objective was to achieve mastery in sgraffito, which would be demonstrated through a variety of products/collections. I wanted to understand the potential, sub-techniques, challenges, and possibilities of this technique. Additionally, I sought to gain practical experience in running a studio, including aspects such as production, marketing, conducting workshops, and managing firings.

DID I
achieve it?
This project has been a transformative journey that has brought about substantial growth in my artistic practice and personal development. Under the invaluable guidance and mentorship of Vivitsa Kohli, I have dedicated nine months to honing my skills and mastering Sgraffito. This accomplishment holds great significance for me, as it has instilled a deep sense of confidence and expertise in my ability to execute this technique. I am proud to have emerged as an adept practitioner of Sgraffito, and I look forward to continuing my artistic exploration and pushing the boundaries of my craft.
